Overview of the position:
The Surveyor (Professional) position supports the City of Austin Public Works Department in the Quality Management Division. This position will review easements, easement releases dedications, right-of-way acquisitions, right-of-way and alley vacations, license agreements, fee acquisitions and annexations. This position will research record information, process survey data, prepare CAD files and field notes and assist field crew for boundary, topographic and design surveys.

Travel:
The Public Works Department is comprised of multiple facilities located throughout Austin.
If you are selected for this position, and meet the Driver Safety Standards in the City of Austin Driver Safety Program, you may drive when necessary to multiple locations as part of your regular job duties. Otherwise, you are responsible for getting to and from these locations.

Additional Information:
If you are identified as a top candidate, verification of your education, which may include High School graduation or GED, undergraduate and/or graduate degrees, will be required.

90 Day Provision for Additional Vacancy:
If the same or an additional vacancy occurs within the Public Works Department in the same job title within 90 days after the start date of the top candidate, the additional position may be offered to another top candidate from the same candidate pool. This may include filling other vacancies with the same job title in other division/work locations within the City of Austin Public Works Department. Decisions on assigned selection may be made at the time of hire based on the business needs of the department.

Pay Range

$29.56 – $38.42

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities

Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

1. Performs land surveys on behalf of the City.
2. Certifies and seals survey documents.
3. Analyzes and reviews data gathered by field crews to ensure completeness and accuracy of survey information.
4. Uses survey data to generate coordinate files for use in determining property lines, benchmarks, topographical features, cross-sections, field notes, quantities of materials used, and metes and bounds descriptions.
5. Prepares scale drawings and plans for various construction projects, rights-of-way, easements, or boundary line determinations.
6. Prepares and reviews easements, property descriptions, plans, ordinances, and agreements.
7. Researches City ownership, right-of-way, and other property issues
8. Creates maps showing survey and topographic information.
9. Leads survey workgroup activities on behalf of the City.
10. May train others.

May be responsible for the full range of supervisory activities including selection, training, evaluation, counseling, and recommendation for dismissal.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.

Knowledge of the concepts, principles, theories, and methods used in the measurement or determination of land boundaries, distances, elevations, areas, angles, and other features of the earth’s surface.
Knowledge of algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.
Skilled in using various Global Positioning Surveying (GPS) applications
Skilled in the collection, analysis, and reporting of complex numerical data.
Skilled in established and maintaining effective working relationships with others.
Ability to properly maintain complex engineering files and records.
Ability to read and interpret maps, plats, sketches, field books, and construction drawings.
Ability to adhere to the principles and practices of the Professional Land Surveying Practices Act.
Ability to effectively lead others in the workplace.
Ability to use a hand-held calculator.
Ability to use a desktop computer.
