REPORTS TO: RPLS, Director of Survey
PURPOSE
The Survey Technician reviews and processes the results of field surveys, including the shape, contour, location, elevation, and dimensions of land features. The Survey Technician works under the direction of a Registered Professional Land Surveyor on assignments that are complex in nature where judgment is required in resolving problems and making routine recommendations.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Independently performs assignments with clear and specified objectives and involving conventional types of work. Work is reviewed in progress and upon completion.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Produces CADD drawings on a large number of concurrent projects, to include boundary, topographic, land title surveys and tree surveys.
- Demonstrates complete understanding of CADD software and how to apply it to company procedures.
- Prepares drawings to 90% completion with little to minor direction.
- Reviews and processes the results of field surveys, including the shape, contour, location, elevation and dimensions of land features.
- Searches legal and survey records and land titles to obtain information about property boundaries and areas to be surveyed.
- Coordinates findings with the work of engineers, clients and others involved in projects.
- Verifies the accuracy of field survey data, including measurements and calculations conducted at survey sites.
- Prepares descriptions of property boundary surveys for use in deeds, leases or other legal documents.
- Prepares data, charts, plots, maps, records, and documents related to surveys. Performs thorough quality control of drawings/documents.
- Maintains file management of AutoCAD files and other documents.
- Communicates effectively with other team members. Anticipates and requests necessary information required from others to complete project requirements.
- Works under the supervision of a Registered Professional Land Surveyor and follows standard procedures and written and verbal instructions to accomplish assigned tasks.
- Manages deadlines and prioritizes assignments. Works within defined project scopes and budgets.
- Minimal supervision required to complete assignments.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Recognizes technical issues and recommends solutions.
- Estimates time and resources for proposed projects.
- Provides solutions and ideas to Survey CADD Standards and software applications.
- Delegates tasks to Survey Crew or other Survey Technicians.
- Coordinates directly with clients, contractors, attorneys and/or other external contacts regarding survey requirements.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
- Demonstrates understanding of local codes and regulatory requirements for design.
- Demonstrates understanding of CADD Standards as applies to functional job role.
- Demonstrates proficiency in relevant software skills, including:
- AutoCAD Civil 3D
- MicroStation
- Trimble Business Center
- Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel
- Demonstrates knowledge of firm operating procedures and standards.
- Well-developed understanding of field survey methods and calculations.
- Working knowledge of field instrumentation, GPS, and robotic total stations.
- Familiar with safety procedures, identification of hazardous situations, and company standards.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrates strong math skills, including algebra and trigonometry.
- Demonstrates complete understanding of project requirements, including budget, design requirements, and complete project submittal.
EDUCATION
- Associate’s Degree in Drafting/Design or equivalent from an accredited college or technical school or equivalent experience.
- May have Surveyor in Training (SIT) certification.
- INTERNAL/EXTERNAL CONTACTS
- Frequent work with people at all levels of the organization.
- Regular contact with contractors and engineers.
- Occasional contact with attorneys, clients, and regulatory agency personnel.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Meeting the goals of the client and project team requires being accurate, meeting strict deadlines, and working overtime based on business need.
- Performing the duties of this job requires working with others in a group or team in an office environment, including prolonged sitting, frequent standing, talking, hearing, walking, using a computer, phone, and general office equipment, and occasional reaching, stooping, kneeling, crouching, climbing, or crawling. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
- Requires contact with others (face-to-face, by telephone, electronic or otherwise).
- Requires repeating the same physical activities or mental activities over and over.
- The employee must lift and/or move objects up to 25 pounds regularly, up to 50 pounds frequently, and up to 100 pounds occasionally.
- Vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to perform field survey work which includes:
- Driving to job sites.
- Standing and walking on uneven terrain.
- Wearing common protective or safety equipment.
- Physical labor, working outdoors, with exposure to all weather conditions, minor burns, cuts, bites or stings, and loud noises.
