The aim has been to simplify imagery found on historic maps and to convey new or traditionally overlooked information in a way that is approachable for younger learners and seasoned Texas history enthusiasts alike.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-2037 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/dmcat.austincc.edu\/gis-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2026\/03\/GSM-Spotlight.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"693\" height=\"849\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dmcat.austincc.edu\/gis-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2026\/03\/GSM-Spotlight.png 693w, https:\/\/dmcat.austincc.edu\/gis-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2026\/03\/GSM-Spotlight-480x588.png 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 693px, 100vw\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/historictexasmaps.com\/showcase\/showcase\/gis-educational-maps\">Click here<\/a> to view the GIS Educational Maps showcase page.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The latest GIS Education Map published, <a href=\"https:\/\/historictexasmaps.com\/collection\/search-results\/97522-aerial-view-of-san-antonio-de-bexar-and-alamo-fortifications-gis-educational-maps\"><em>Aerial View of San Antonio de B\u00e9xar and Alamo Fortifications<\/em>, 1836<\/a> (2026), is the GLO\u2019s first three-dimensional (3D) map produced using GIS technology. The term \u201caerial view\u201d refers to any view from a great height, often from an airplane either looking down or sideways from a window. In the nineteenth century, maps of this type came to be known as \u201cbirds-eye\u201d views. Sitting at just under 3,000 feet and at an approximately thirty-degree angle, this map uses an oblique projection to show each building as 3D.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2039 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/dmcat.austincc.edu\/gis-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2026\/03\/97522_3-Alamo_R.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"467\" height=\"299\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dmcat.austincc.edu\/gis-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2026\/03\/97522_3-Alamo_R.png 467w, https:\/\/dmcat.austincc.edu\/gis-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2026\/03\/97522_3-Alamo_R-300x192.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 467px) 100vw, 467px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Lynnette Cen and Dominic Romo, Aerial View of San Antonio de B\u00e9xar and Alamo Fortifications, 1836, Austin, TX: 2026, <a href=\"https:\/\/historictexasmaps.com\/collection\/search-results\/97522-aerial-view-of-san-antonio-de-bexar-and-alamo-fortifications-gis-educational-maps\">Map #97522<\/a>, TGLO.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>To create this look, staff first constructed a two-dimensional (2D) map depicting the town using flat polygons for buildings. Lines in 2D represent the San Antonio River, San Pedro Creek, roads, and acequias (irrigation ditches). The basemap features a watercolor style and parchment texture from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/en-us\/home\">Esri<\/a>, a GIS mapping software. Notice the different shapes used to create San Fernando Church (F). A 3D model of the Alamo created by Pape-Dawson Engineers is featured in the upper right corner of the map. Details surrounding the Alamo include a pecan tree in the top left corner and abatis in the bottom right.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Containing an unprecedented level of detail for a GLO-produced GIS Educational Map, this is the largest scale \u2013 one inch to two hundred feet \u2013 used to this point. This facilitated an incredible amount of detail, including the Alamo\u2019s artillery pieces, images of horses at the Potrero, and fencing and white oak trees known to the area. A dead tree in the northwest corner of the Alamo mimics a pecan tree during the winter. An abatis (defense made of felled trees) appears in the Alamo\u2019s southeast corner. The map also locates batteries from the Texians\u2019 Siege of B\u00e9xar and the Battle of the Alamo. The estimated sites of the Alamo funeral pyres appear on either side of the Alameda (cottonwood grove) roadway as reported by B\u00e9xar alcalde Francisco Antonio Ruiz.
