This position is also responsible for providing mapping support to internal staff and the public. The GIS Technician is expected to be self-initiated and have the ability to exercise independent judgement when appropriate.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Job Responsibilities\/Duties<\/h3>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><b>100%<\/b>\u00a0&#8211;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Provides excellent customer service to all internal and external customers in all functions of the job, at all times, by phone, email, and in-person.<\/li>\n<li>Develops, maintains, updates, and retrieves information for various GIS datasets including geodatabases, shapefiles, and layers within a spatial database engine (SDE).<\/li>\n<li>Performs data conversion\/projection and integration of external data sources into GIS. This includes interpreting and researching legal documents; digitizing cartographic data; and entering or analyzing demographic and geographic data.<\/li>\n<li>Produces maps and related graphics (both digital and paper) for public hearings, meetings, other public forums, and other department needs such as reports, publications, or related documents.<\/li>\n<li>Conduct analyses on data and produce documents and maps for decision making purposes.<\/li>\n<li>Responds to general questions regarding information and data found on documents and maps.<\/li>\n<li>Handles requests from customers for copies of various document and maps.<\/li>\n<li>Meets with individuals and groups on a routine basis to assess problems and provide solutions.<\/li>\n<li>Performs field, archival, historical, and statistical research in support of department activities.<\/li>\n<li>Develops and maintains document and map archives.<\/li>\n<li>Develops and maintains procedure manuals, metadata, specifications and other documentation for GIS activities and datasets.<\/li>\n<li>Maintains a high level of proficiency in GIS software, professional practices, and techniques.<\/li>\n<li>Prepared to answer questions at public meetings regarding past, current and future projects, and\/or other departmental work.<\/li>\n<li>Provides computer technical support to office staff and field crews.<\/li>\n<li>Operates and maintains plotters, printers, and wide format scanners.<\/li>\n<li>Adheres to established work product deadlines.<\/li>\n<li>Demonstrates high ethical standards, trustworthiness, and personal integrity.<\/li>\n<li>Regular and punctual attendance is required.<\/li>\n<li>Performs other duties as assigned.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Minimum Requirements, Certificates &amp; Licenses<\/h3>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<ul>\n<li>Associate degree in Geography or related field is required, Bachelor\u2019s degree is preferred.<strong>OR<\/strong>\n<p>An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.<\/li>\n<li>Knowledge and experience with ESRI ArcGIS Knowledge of fundamental GIS principles and practices.<\/li>\n<li>Experience with MS Windows and Windows-based applications. Excellent cartographic, written, and oral communication skills. Familiarity with mapping, surveying, and engineering principles and practices as applied to municipal systems.<\/li>\n<li>GIS Data Analysis experience is preferred, but not required.<\/li>\n<li>Programming experience relevant to the ESRI ArcGIS environment is preferred, but not required.<\/li>\n<li>Experience with addressing and ability to interpret and reproduce platted information is preferred, but not required.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Must have a valid Class \u201cC\u201d Driver\u2019s License and an insurable driving record.<\/li>\n<li>Must pass a drug test, driver\u2019s license check, and background check.<\/li>\n<li>Must be able to work overtime when requested.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Knowledge, Skills and Abilities<\/h3>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><b>KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES<\/b>\u00a0&#8211;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Knowledge of and ability to apply local, state and federal regulations that apply to department functions.<\/li>\n<li>Knowledge of and skilled in customer service principles and practices.<\/li>\n<li>Skilled in problem-solving.<\/li>\n<li>Skilled in gathering and analyzing information and making recommendations based on findings and in support of organizational goals.<\/li>\n<li>Skilled in reading and comprehending technical or specialized materials.<\/li>\n<li>Skilled in reading and interpreting plans, blueprints, schematics, and\/or other related development documents.<\/li>\n<li>Skilled in applying independent judgment, personal discretion, and resourcefulness in interpreting and applying guidelines.<\/li>\n<li>Skilled in operating a computer and related software applications.<\/li>\n<li>Ability to utilize GIS software and programming.<\/li>\n<li>Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.<\/li>\n<li>Ability to form and maintain effective relationships with co-workers and customers.<\/li>\n<li>Ability to promote inclusiveness and impartiality throughout the organization.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Physical Requirements<\/h3>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>Tasks involve the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and\/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (5-15 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation. Work is performed in usual office conditions with rare exposure to disagreeable environmental factors. Some tasks require visual abilities. Some tasks require oral communications ability. Physical requirements include visual acuity, speech and hearing; hand and eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate computer keyboard and basic office equipment. Subject to sitting and standing to perform the essential functions. Working conditions are in an office environment.
