From GIS Professor Sally Holl:
Cartographic Perspectives is the *free* peer reviewed professional journal of the North American Cartographic Information Society. You can sign up to receive notices for new issues here: https://nacis.org/initiatives/nacis-news/
You can also volunteer to write book reviews and have your reviews published in the journal. Wow! It is a great way to get free books and learn new things! Instructions for reviewing books are here: https://cartographicperspectives.org/index.php/journal/books-for-review
Lastly, you can write an article for the journal. If you are a student, I believe there was a relatively significant monetary award associated with publishing an article in the journal in the past and I believe it may still hold true now; fact check that with them. I was told at the meeting in Tacoma that they will help you think of a topic, what to write about and how to write it if you reach out to them and let them know you are a GIS student interested in writing your first article: https://cartographicperspectives.org/index.php/journal/about/contact Daniel Huffman is one of the kindest, most helpful people I have ever met.
