Position Information TxDOT’s GIS team is seeking motivated individuals to join the largest GIS shop in Texas state government.  Come join our team of highly experienced, tech-savvy GIS professionals working in a collaborative, fun-loving, team environment.

Perform GIS data entry, analysis, and editing work in the development of the state’s GIS roadway network. The position includes significant opportunities to grow GIS skills and contribute directly to exciting projects. Work includes editing roadways, making maps, contributing to team projects, and developing custom tools and applications. Candidates work independently and in small team settings. Entry-level positions work under the supervision of a GIS technical lead.

Ideal candidates are proactive and resourceful and have an interest in learning how to work with large datasets, perform analysis, make maps, and do basic coding. Opportunities for training and growing skills using ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online/Portal, Python, SQL, JavaScript, and FME.

GIS Analyst I – B18 Salary Range $42,521.00 – $67,671.00
GIS Analyst II – B20 Salary Range $48,158.00 – $77,477.00

Position Description

 GIS Analyst I:

Performs geographic information systems (GIS) data development, integration, and analysis, produces maps and graphics, and extracts, analyzes and reports data. Provides technical assistance and support of transportation-related activities or projects. Work requires contact with governmental agencies. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

GIS Analyst II:

Performs complex geographic information systems (GIS) data development, integration, and analysis, produces maps and graphics, and extracts, analyzes, and reports data. Provides technical assistance and support of transportation-related activities or projects. Work requires contact with governmental agencies. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Essential Duties:

GIS Analyst I:

  • Creates, maintains, and updates GIS databases and cartographic products using the ESRI suite of ArcGIS software.
  • Uses linear referencing to update and maintain the roadway network and attributes.
  • Digitizes and maintains roadway line work and attributes, basemap layers, and administrative polygon boundaries.
  • Follows documented workflows, standard operating procedures, and best practices to consistently produce high-quality data with minimal errors or corrections.
  • Researches new software and/or techniques for improving performance or processes.
  • Creates and updates documentation including standard operating procedures, project plans, wiki pages, metadata, etc.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

GIS Analyst II:
All the Above and: 

  • Assists in the creation of custom tools and applications using Python, HTML/JavaScript/CSS, SQL and/or other coding languages.

 

 Minimum Qualifications:

GIS Analyst I:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Geography, Geographic Information Systems or related field.
  • Relevant work experience may be substituted for degree on a year per year basisSubstitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Experience: Experience can be satisfied by full-time or prorated part-time equivalent

GIS Analyst II:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Geography, Geographic Information Systems or related field.
  • Relevant work experience may be substituted for degree on a year-per-year basis OR related graduate-level education may be
    substituted for experience on a year-per-year basis.
     Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Experience:

  • 1 YEAR Using Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) products in cartographic production, GIS or GPS analysis
  • Experience can be satisfied by full-time or prorated part-time equivalent

Licenses and Certifications: Valid driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience with SQL, Python, JavaScript, and/or FME preferred.
