Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented GIS Intern to join our dynamic team! As a GIS Intern, you will have the exciting opportunity to contribute to our geospatial data management efforts. This position primarily focuses on collecting GPS points in the field, digitizing assets, and ensuring the quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) of assets that have been digitized. This internship provides a valuable learning experience for individuals interested in pursuing a career in geographic information systems and data management.

GENERAL PURPOSE:  Under close supervision, collects GPS points in the field, digitizes assets, and ensures the quality assurance and quality control of assets that have been digitized.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by court interns only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Interns may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties as needed.

  • Field Data Collection: Utilize GPS technology to accurately collect spatial data and GPS points in various field locations, following established protocols and methodologies.
  • Asset Digitization: Digitize and convert physical assets, features, and spatial information into digital formats using GIS software. Ensure the accuracy and precision of digitized data.
  • Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC): Thoroughly review and verify digitized assets to ensure data accuracy, completeness, and adherence to established data standards. Identify and rectify any discrepancies or errors in the digitized data.
  • Data Integration: Assist in integrating newly collected and digitized data into existing GIS databases and systems.
  • Documentation: Maintain detailed records of field data collection activities, digitization processes, and QA/QC checks.
  • Problem Solving: Identify and troubleshoot issues related to data collection, digitization, and data quality.
  • Communication: Effectively communicate findings, challenges, and progress to supervisors and team members.
  • When available, will participate in staff and other management meetings.
  • Maintains the absolute confidentiality of all records and information.

Performs other duties as assigned or required.

 

Education, Experience, Licenses and Certifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:

  • Currently pursuing a certificate or degree in Geography, GIS, Environmental Science, or a related field.
  • Basic understanding of geographic information systems (GIS) principles and concepts.
  • Familiarity with GPS technology and its application in data collection.
  • Proficiency in GIS software such as ArcGIS, QGIS, or similar platforms.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to data accuracy.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to adapt to changing field conditions.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Willingness to work in outdoor field environments and travel as required.
  • Previous experience with asset digitization and QA/QC processes is a plus but not required.

Required Licenses or Certifications:
Must possess a valid Texas Driver’s License.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Other Requirements

Physical Demands / Work Environment:

  • Work is performed in a standard office environment and is subject to sitting, standing, walking, bending, and reaching for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to safely lift and carry equipment and materials up to thirty (30) pounds.
